IDPH is urging everyone not to eat the pre-cut melons purchased from any Walmart store in IL, or in any other affected states.

Six people are sick in IL, 11 in IN, 32 in MI, 10 in Missouri and one in Ohio.

Those who reported illness said they had eaten pre-cut cantaloupe, watermelon, honeydew melon, or a fruit salad mix with melon.

A multistate salmonella outbreak has been linked to cut melons, and most of the illnesses have been reported in MI and Indiana.

Pre-cut melon sold at Walmart stores in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, or Ohio. Some people could end up with severe diarrhea that requires a hospital trip.

Consumers who do not remember what store their pre-cut melon was purchased from should also discard it.

To date, 60 people infected with the outbreak strain have been reported in five states, including 32 cases in MI.

Officials say the IL salmonella cases linked to pre-cut melon affected people ages 23 to 87.

Dozens of people are sick across the Midwest due to a salmonella outbreak in certain pre-chopped melons.

Most persons infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria. Both chains are cooperating with the investigation and have removed fruit associated with the outbreak from their shelves.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say there's no need to avoid whole melon at this point. The CDC has indicated there have been more hospitalizations with this outbreak than what is typically seen.
