The name translates loosely as "lively, young horse" from a Eurasian dialect- a nod to the firm's crest, which has featured a leaping horse since 1952. Some of the spotted cars have been wearing exhaust exit surrounds that were fake and fitted to hide the car's identity.

Two permanently activated synchronous motors (PSM) generating a system output of over 600 horsepower accelerate the electric sports vehicle to 60 miles per hour in well under 3.5 seconds and to 124 miles per hour (200 km/h) on the track in less than twelve seconds. The car's top speed will be 155 miles an hour.

Porsche has billed the Taycan as a track-capable EV, created to support multiple jump starts in quick succession without power loss due to battery overheating. Porsche executives have said that more electric cars will follow.

Porsche is doubling down on electric cars, saying it will pour over €6 billion (about $7.1 million) into electromobility by 2022. The production model will get the new Porsche Taycan name and be unveiled fully in early 2019, with customers taking delivery later that year. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume told us: "We will think of different options and there will be more than one, with different levels of power".

Porsche is bullish about the future of its full-electric Mission E Cross Turismo study that debuted at the auto show here this week. The engine plant is being expanded to manufacture electric motors.

Over-the-air updates will be possible on the Porsche Taycan, upgrading on-board infotainment systems and safety tech, but also offering to boost power if the customer wishes.

Porsche says the Taycan will feature two electric motors generating a total more than 440kW.

"Our new electric sports auto is strong and dependable; it's a vehicle that can consistently cover long distances and that epitomizes freedom", says Oliver Blume, chairman of Porsche AG's executive board, in an offhand swat at the Tesla Model S.

The Taycan will have a range of 500 km and be able to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds.
