  • Trump commutes life sentence of grandmother after Kim Kardashian meeting

Alice Marie Johnson spent more than two decades behind bars, serving life without parole for non-violent drug offences.

Notably, the decision came after a meeting with Kim Kardashian, who has always been an advocate for the incarcerated 63-year-old.

Trump confirmed the visit in a tweet: "Great meeting with @KimKardashian today, talked about prison reform and sentencing". She was convicted in 1996 on eight criminal counts related to a Memphis-based cocaine trafficking operation.

The reality TV star originally involved herself in Johnson's case in October after seeing a Mic Opinion video where Johnson shared her story from prison.

Johnson was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, and appellate courts and the U.S. Supreme Court had denied her appeals.

Although Kardashian's advocacy undoubtedly aided in Johnson's release, prison reform activists have attempted to secure her clemency for years.

"I want to say to President Trump, I am going to make you proud that you gave me this second chance in life", Alice told CNN.

Kardashian West, on Twitter, said "Telling her for the first time and hearing her screams while crying together is a moment I will never forget".

"It appears we now need Kim Kardashian and other famous celebrities to tell Trump about the thousands of others with stories just like that of Alice Johnson", King said in a tweet.

She said the President "felt it".

She stashed the illicit earnings there and passed along messages to her conspirators, who authorities believe earned millions in the illegal scheme. "They said that they can see the place where my body lay but they could never take me home again".

A day following President Donald Trump commuting her sentence, Alice Marie Johnson is speaking out. While Obama pushed for commuted sentences and pardons for drug convictions a number of times during his presidency, he didn't approve Johnson's requests. She said, " I lost my job - and - then my youngest son was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident... "I hope to continue this important work by working together with organizations who have been fighting this fight for much longer than I have and deserve the recognition".

US Attorney Michael Dunavant issued a statement late Wednesday: "Included in our Constitution is the absolute power and authority of the President to grant Executive Clemency relief, and I understand and respect the President's decision to grant a commutation of Ms. Johnson's sentence".
