No North Korea relief until verifiable denuclearisation steps: Mattis

  • North Korea to get relief only after verifiable step to denuclearisation

He is telling his South Korean and Japanese counterparts they must maintain a strong defensive stance so the diplomats can negotiate from a position of strength.

"North Korea will get relief from worldwide sanctions only when it has shown irreversible moves toward denuclearisation, US Secretary of Defense James Mattis said on Sunday in Singapore at the start of a meeting with the defence ministers of South Korea and Japan". The ministers were in Singapore for the annual IISS Shangri-La Dialogue, which brings together global defense officials.

However, on May 24, Trump abruptly canceled the anticipated US-North Korea summit, citing hostile comments by Pyongyang and stressing that he was looking forward to meeting with the North Korean leader "some day". "North Korea will receive relief only when it demonstrates verifiable and irreversible steps to denuclearization", Mattis stated in Singapore on Sunday.

"At the end of dark days of confrontation and tensions past year, we heard a message of peace and harmony at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics", Song said, adding that diplomatic efforts are "changing the course of history".

The Pentagon chief made it clear Saturday that his country is not negotiating with North Korea on the future of American troops stationed on the peninsula, as the leaders of the two sides will soon meet here each other.

Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera told the Singapore forum Saturday he was aware of reports Trump no longer planned "maximum pressure" on North Korea.

Asked whether the status of US troops in the region would be on the negotiation table during the high-level meeting, Mattis ruled out the prospect, suggesting that it was too early in the process to begin discussing military deployments.

The North Korean regime has historically shown an unwillingness to relinquish its nuclear capabilities, which it views as a guarantee of survival in the face of United States intimidation. Speaking to reporters before the closed-door talks began, Song called for greater military cooperation to achieve the denuclearization of North Korea. "Let's hope for the best".
