Iran's top leader vows response to any attack

  • Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei addresses thousands of Iranian people and authorities gathered at the mausoleum of the late founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini in Tehran

"This will never happen", he said during a ceremony to mark the 29th anniversary of the death of revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

"The consequences will be many, many more refugees and you know where exactly they will come", he said, in what seemed a direct warning to Germany, which has faced increasing polarization over its border controls and giving rise to the nationalist AfD, the largest opposition party after capitalizing on anger over the arrival of more than a million asylum seekers since 2015.

European signatories are scrambling to save the accord, which they see as crucial to forestalling an Iranian nuclear weapon, by seeking to ring-fence trade with Iran against new US financial sanctions to dissuade Tehran from quitting the deal.

The JCPOA agreement, which stands for Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and is more commonly known as Iran nuclear deal, was signed by Iran, United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, China and Germany in 2015.

Trump abandoned the agreement on May 8, arguing that he wanted a bigger deal that not only limited Iran's atomic work but also reined in its support for proxies in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Lebanon and that curbed its ballistic missile program. Though committed to the deal, European powers share Trump's concerns and want broader talks with Iran to address the issues.

"Our enemies have staged economic and psychological. warfare against us, and new American sanctions [reinstated after Trumps' withdrawal from JCPOA] are part of it", Khamenei said.

He warned that Iran is seeking to "conquer the Middle East".

"Iran calls for our destruction, but it's also seeking nuclear weapons to carry out its genocidal design", he said.

He said USA "illegal withdrawal" from the deal and its "bullying methods to bring other governments in line" with that decision have discredited the rule of law in worldwide arena.

Khamenei said Iran had no intention of curbing its influence in the Middle East and urged Arab youth to stand up to USA pressure.

Options being considered by the EU to keep Tehran in the nuclear deal include new credit lines for Tehran, increased energy cooperation and implementing EU laws to block European companies from caving in to US sanctions. As for curbing Iran's global influence, the supreme leader stressed that "we will continue our support for oppressed nations". Some regional countries act like their own people's enemies, ' he said in an allusion to US -allied Gulf Arab states who have supported rebels fighting to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a close ally of Tehran.

Khamenei sent out a series of bombastic tweets railing against Israel and the US on Sunday in which Iran's top leader said his Middle East neighbor is a "malignant cancerous tumor" in the region.
