Serena Williams aces inappropriate Trump question at French Open

  • Serena Williams says she is “an honorary Armenian”

Maria Sharapova easily handled the big serve of No 6-seeded Karolina Pliskova and overwhelmed her 6-2, 6-1 to move closer to a possible French Open showdown against Serena Williams.

The last time they played was in the 2016 Australian Open quarterfinals, Sharapova's final appearance before her 15-month drug suspension. "She's so young, I don't really bring her".

"I lost the first set and I thought I've just got to try harder and Serena came out", said a beaming Williams after giving her skin-tight, black catsuit another outing. And now I'm playing, which is insane. "Every day is a great day I'm excited to. fight my heart out".

Williams and Sharapova will face each other for the first time in the last 16 since the quarter-final of the 2016 Australian Open, which was Sharapova's last match before a 15-month doping ban.

She next plays seventh-seeded Caroline Garcia of France, who cruised past Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu 6-1, 6-3, earlier in the day.

Sharapova said she was looking forward to her latest clash against Williams after making light work of Kristyna Pliskova.

Barty wrapped it up when Williams netted a weary-looking forehand, her 12th unforced error of the set.

Many will no doubt tip the 31-year-old to end that wretched run on Monday, given continuing questions over Williams' fitness but her latest performance suggests she's on her way to finding her best tennis once more.

But against Gorges she underlined her credentials, dominating from the start with a break in the fourth game and she took the first set with an emphatic smash.

The match was predicted to be a tight affair but victory was never in doubt on Roland Garros' main show court Philippe-Chatrier as the Russian won 6-2 6-1 in just 59 minutes.

A fifth ace of the contest won her the set.

The 25th-seeded Estonian advanced by beating two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-4).

"You know, she's been playing, like I said, for over a year now".

The five-time Grand Slam champion missed the 2016 tournament because of a doping ban and was denied an invitation past year shortly after her return from suspension.

Men's winners included 10-time champion Rafael Nadal, No. 3 Marin Cilic, No. 5 Juan Martin del Potro and No. 6 Kevin Anderson.

Taking to the court of the French Open this week, Serena donned a Wakanda-inspired catsuit, something that got everyone talking for all the right reasons.

"Richard is a very good friend".

On Saturday, Williams took the opportunity to express her disappointment at some of the things Sharapova said about her in her recently-published autobiography "Unstoppable". In front of a crowd that included former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson, it took 15 minutes for Williams to gain the upper hand, sprinting to reach a drop shot and whip a cross-court forehand passing victor for a 3-1 lead.
