Visa debit cards not working in European-wide outage

Some non-Visa branded cards could also be affected, with a range of banks using the payment system. It's certain cards, certain checkouts, certain stores.

The Royal Bank of Scotland's help Twitter account said cash machine withdrawals were unaffected.

The spokesman added: "We will attempt card payments and there are certain things we can try at the checkout to get people through".

Visa says it is "working as quickly as possible to resolve the situation".




The market for global payment cards is dominated by China's UnionPay, Visa, and Mastercard, according to research and consulting firm RBR (pdf).

Customers have had their cards declined despite having adequate funds, due to the widespread problem which is affecting Visa users across Europe.

By around 10pm Visa said service returned to normal saying the issue was a result of a hardware failure.

The company confirmed that it was suffering an outage and investigating the cause, The Guardian reported. The Bank of England, which regulates Visa in the United Kingdom, said it is aware of the issue and is working with the company to solve the problem.
