  • The Afghan forces have eliminated all the assailants involved in the coordinated attack on the Ministry of Interior compound in Kabul

An attack on Afghanistan's Interior Ministry in Kabul has been repelled with one policeman and all of the attackers being killed in the latest in a series of militant attacks in the city.

An Afghan official says loud explosions have rocked the area around the Interior Ministry and that militants are exchanging fire with security forces.

Officials said the fighting left one policeman dead and five others wounded. That facility was attacked in February by suicide bombers in ambulances who killed more than 100 people, many of them police officers.

A US rocket artillery strike last week on a gathering of Taliban leaders in southern Afghanistan killed at least 50 of them, a USA military official said Tuesday.

"We think the meeting was to plan next steps", said Lt. Col. Martin O'Donnell, spokesman for USA forces in Afghanistan.

The attack on a meeting of commanders in the district of Musa Qala in Helmand, one of the heartlands of the Taliban insurgency, was a significant blow to the insurgents, said Lt. Col. Martin O'Donnell, spokesman for US forces in Afghanistan.

Later Wednesday, the American commander of US and coalition forces in Afghanistan cast doubt the attack was the work of IS, saying instead there are indications the Taliban-allied Haqqani network was behind it.

Also on Wednesday a vehicle bomb in the southern city of Kandahar went off inside a garage where Afghan army vehicles were being repaired, killing three mechanics and wounding 13 people, governor's spokesman Daud Ahmadi said. He said both bombers were identified, shot and killed by forces.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack, but did not provide evidence for their claim.

Two blasts went off outside the ministry compound before assailants attempted to storm the building, triggering fierce clashes with security forces that lasted for hours.

Afghan militants have been targeted in an artillery strike, the United States has said, while the Taliban carried out an attack on government forces.

"[These] are just a few examples of the improvements we've seen in the [Afghan forces] fighting abilities, which ... is the focus of our investment and one of the key parts of the South Asia strategy - defeating 80 percent of enemy attacks, retaking any fallen district centers, successfully defending Farah, pursuing and killing the attackers, defeating terrorist attacks", the general said.

O'Donnell said that because of the large number of leaders killed and their involvement in a range of attack planning, the impact of the HIMARS strike "will be felt beyond Helmand province".

"Eight civilians have also been wounded", provincial police spokesman Shapoor Ahmadzai told AFP.
