  • Trump to pardon controversial Indian American pundit Dinesh D’Souza

The day's pardon action began early Thursday, as Trump tweeted: "Will be giving a Full Pardon to Dinesh D'Souza today".

"Lawmakers must act now to close New York's double jeopardy loophole and ensure that anyone who evades federal justice by virtue of a politically expedient pardon can be held accountable if they violate NY law". Instead, he was sentenced to five years of probation and eight months in a "community confinement center" and ordered to pay a $30,000 fine.

D'Souza is a prominent conservative filmmaker who was convicted on the illegal campaign contributions in 2014.

After D'Souza's pardon, some constitutional scholars, legal analysts and Democratic lawmakers accused Trump of undermining the rule of law with pardons based on political considerations.

D'Souza has argued that he was unfairly treated by the Obama administration. Eighteen years in jail for being stupid and saying things that every other politician, you know that many other politicans say, "Trump said, according to the White House pool report". The Election Act, however, had already limited campaign contributions to $5,000 from any individual to a candidate in 2012.

President Donald Trump gathered with the actor Sylvester Stallone in the Oval Office on May 24, 2018, to grant a posthumous pardon to Jack Johnson, the heavyweight boxing champion.

Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas welcomed Trump's announcement that he meant to pardon D'Souza.

If you're old enough to remember, Dinesh D'Souza was once considered something of a conservative luminary.

And the president said he was considering commuting the sentence of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was sentenced to more than a decade in prison for corruption after he tried to sell the Senate seat vacated by former President Barack Obama.

D'Souza, Cruz added, is "a powerful voice for freedom, systematically dismantling the lies of the Left - which is why they hate him".

Before pleading guilty in 2014, D'Souza insisted on his innocence and claimed he was targeted for federal prosecution because of his anti-Obama views. "I can not believe how stupid I was, how careless, and how irresponsible", D'Souza wrote in a statement to the judge.

Mr Trump said on Twitter.

On Thursday, D'Souza thanked Trump in Twitter posts that also slammed Bharara. He has also granted one commutation of sentence.

But Trump's willingness to remedy an "unfair" justice system via presidential pardon seems to vanish when speaking about his political enemies. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, former Vice President Dick Cheney's onetime chief of staff, who was convicted in 2007 of lying to investigators and obstruction of justice following the 2003 leak of the covert identity of Central Intelligence Agency officer Valerie Plame.
