  • SHOCKING: Zidane quits Real Madrid

A three-time Fifa World Player of the Year, and Ballon d'Or victor, Zidane has played more than 150 times for both Juventus and Real Madrid.

He won the Spanish league title in his second season, then became the first manager to win the Champions League in his first three seasons when Real defeated Juventus in the 2017 final, and Liverpool this month.

President Florentino Perez appeared alongside him and revealed it was an "unexpected decision".

"This is a odd moment but a very important moment", Zidane said. "After three years, (the club) needs a change in speech, a new work methodology".

"I love this club and the president who gave me the chance to play for this club and manage the club of my dreams". I will be close to this club all my life, but the decision makes a lot of sense. This was also his third consecutive Champions League title. I would have liked to convince him to stay on but I know what he's like.

Just where Real Madrid go from here is hard to fully grasp, as Zinedine Zidane departs the club as their second most successful coach in club history. Real Madrid have the players he needs and will get him the ones he asks for as well.

"All in all, he felt that the distance between players and manager, the authority of the manager, had been hurt". After three years, it's what I have chose to do. "The only thing I want to say is hasta pronto [see you soon] because I know he will return, maybe after a rest". "All I can offer is my love and respect and remind him that this is his home".

There was also a lot of intrigue after Zidane said: "I think it's the moment, both for me, the team and the club (to step down)".

Zidane, under contract until 2020, gave no explicit reason for stepping down, but said he is not now seeking to coach another team.

Cape Town - Zinedine Zidane has called a surprise press conference at Real Madrid's Valdebebas training ground and it is believed he will clarify his future at the club.
