Subtropical Storm Alberto Closes In On Florida; Warnings Of Floods, Tornadoes

  • Alberto is likely to make landfall Monday between New Orleans and Destin Florida before moving into Mississippi and Alabama by Tuesday

Alabama and MS have activated their National Guards in preparation for Subtropical Storm Alberto, which is expected to make Landfall in Florida on Monday.

Alberto, the first named Atlantic storm of 2018, which spun up days before the formal June 1 start of the hurricane season, was packing maximum sustained winds near 105 kilometres per hour and was expected to drop as much as 30cm of rain, slamming an area from MS to western Georgia, the Miami-based hurricane centre said.

Alberto remains below hurricane strength, but is still expected to gust into the Florida Panhandle with 40-50 miles per hour winds, which could spin up a few isolated tornadoes. A tropical storm warning was discontinued from Florida's Anclote River to the Suwannee River.

"The potential for flash flooding, mudslides and landslides will be very high in the [North Carolina] mountains", Panovich said.

The system is forecast to move over the Tennessee Valley on Tuesday and into the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes region on Wednesday and Thursday.

Brief tornadoes are possible from northern Florida into central and southern Georgia, southern SC and southeastern Alabama.

The storm is about 15 miles west northwest of Panama City. And in the Tampa Bay area on the central Gulf Coast, cities offered sandbags for homeowners anxious about floods.

Heavy rains were expected across Florida and in parts of Alabama and Georgia.

Florida Governor Rick Scott issued the declaration for all 67 counties in his state.

As Subtropical Storm Alberto barrels towards the Florida coast, Atlanta can expect to see heavy showers and the possibility for severe weather later Monday afternoon.

A satellite image shows Alberto as it nears landfall on the Florida Panhandle and the Gulf Coast on Monday. Onshore areas along the coast also account for about 45 percent of USA refining capacity and 51 percent of gas processing. Up to 2 inches of rain could fall in the Triangle by Tuesday morning, according to the weather service, with Johnston County and places south and east getting up to 3 inches.

Though the Atlantic hurricane season doesn't officially start until Friday, Alberto was throwing disarray into long holiday weekend plans along the Gulf Coast. Storm surge flooding was less of a concern because Alberto's arrival would not coincide with high tide, he said.

"Heavy rains and gusty winds continue to spread northward over Florida", it tweeted. Subtropical storms can develop into tropical storms, which in turn can strengthen into hurricanes. An average hurricane season produces 12 named storms, of which six become hurricanes, including three major hurricanes.

The early storm doesn't necessarily mean hurricane season will be as busy as last year's though.
