  • Alberto is likely to make landfall Monday between New Orleans and Destin Florida before moving into Mississippi and Alabama by Tuesday

Subtropical Storm Alberto has gained an early jump on the 2018 hurricane season, heading toward expected landfall sometime Monday on the northern Gulf Coast, prompting thousands to evacuate. But this is nature.

An official from the National Weather Service warns that even after Subtropical Storm Alberto passes, there's still a risk for rip currents. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour as it approached the northern Gulf of Mexico.

The US states of Alabama, Florida and MS have declared an emergency ahead of subtropical storm Alberto expected to make landfall on Monday, authorities said. A tropical storm warning remained in effect stretching from Florida's Suwannee River to the border of Alabama and Mississippi.

In the tropics, the story has been Subtropical Storm Alberto, which makes landfall later today across the Panhandle of Florida.

The heaviest rand and strongest winds began to hit Panama City Beach at around 10am on Monday (4pm BST) and the conditions will continue into the afternoon as the centre of the storm gets closer to land.

Subtropical Storm Alberto is making landfall near Laguna Beach, Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center. "We're talking eight to 12 inches of rain this weekend, and storm surges on the Gulf Coast". The storm had maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour (100 kph) as it approached the northern Gulf of Mexico. The governors of Florida, Alabama and MS all declared states of emergency ahead of the storm.

Tropical Storm warnings have has been posted for parts of the northern Gulf Coast and some coastal waters along the western side of FL. The tropical system became a subtropical storm Friday, the hurricane center said.

The storm disrupted plans from Pensacola in the Panhandle to Miami Beach on Florida's southeastern edge.

"Do not think that only areas in the cone will be impacted - everyone in our state must be prepared", Scott said in a statement. With that said, water rise should be relatively minimal and really will be from Crystal River northward along the Florida coast toward the Panhandle.

Alberto has been a subtropical storm since its formation because it lacked the warm core that forms the core of tropical storms. A large portion of the state is also facing the threat of tornadoes, near the coast Sunday, through at least Tuesday night in north Alabama, according to the governor.

The early storm doesn't necessarily mean it will be a busier-than-usual hurricane season though.

The Midlands is under a flash flood watch from midnight until 8 PM Monday.
