Trump says 'productive' talks held on reinstating N Korea summit

However, on Saturday, the two leaders spoke face to face.

"The two leaders frankly exchanged their opinions on implementing the April 27 Panmunjom Declaration [which the two struck in April at their first historic summit] and for the successful staging of a U.S. -NK summit", Blue House spokesman Yoon Young-chan said.

Koh Yu-hwan, am expert on Korean relations at Dongguk University, said Saturday's meeting between Moon and Kim increased the likelihood of the Singapore summit taking place as originally intended.

A statement from North Korea's state news agency KCNA said Kim expressed "his fixed will" on the possibility of meeting Trump as previously planned. Pyongyang took issue with the two-week combined air drills between Seoul and Washington that ended Friday.

TRT World spoke to Seoul-based journalist Bruce Harrison for more on the story. Mr. Moon said Mr. Trump's decision left him "perplexed" and was "very regrettable". The president did not call South Korean President Moon Jae-in or Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to inform them of it, White House officials confirmed.

While maintaining that Kim is committed to denuclearisation, Moon acknowledged Pyongyang and Washington may have differing expectations of what that means, and he urged both sides to hold working-level talks to resolve their differences.

The meeting comes after President Trump cancelled the upcoming June 12th meeting amid renewed tensions with the North.

Mr. Trump's back-and-forth over his summit plans with Mr. Kim has exposed the fragility of Seoul as an intermediary.

Asked Friday if the North Koreans were playing games with their communications, Trump responded: "Everybody plays games". Now that the two sides at least understand what the other wants and are willing to pledge, Moon said he expects "the summit will turn out fine", as US and North Korean working level officials have resumed talks.

On Friday, North Korea issued a statement saying it was still "willing to give the U.S. time and opportunities" to reconsider talks "at any time, at any format".

The meeting was the latest dramatic turn in a week of diplomatic ups and downs surrounding the prospects for an unprecedented summit between the United States and North Korea, and the strongest sign yet that the leaders of the two Koreas are trying to keep the on-again off-again meeting on track.

Notably, the statement did not appear in the May 26 edition of Rodong Sinmun, the official mouthpiece of the North's ruling party that's widely read by North Koreans.

Experts believe that economic pressure brought about by the sanctions has encouraged Kim Jong-un to seek talks. Mr. Kim Jong-un's comments published by the newspaper did not include any mention of his potential meeting with Mr. Trump.

Mr Trump's aides had warned that merely agreeing to the summit had provided Mr Kim with long-sought global legitimacy and, if Mr Trump ultimately backed out, he risked fostering the perception that the president was insufficiently committed to diplomatic solutions to the nuclear question.

But there's also skepticism whether Kim will ever agree to fully relinquish his nuclear arsenal, which he likely sees as his only guarantee of survival.
