The McLaren driver reckons the circuit, and not the cars - wider and with more downforce this year - was to blame for the lack of action during the race. So I'm stoked. There was a few doubts that came in midrace.

Ricciardo's main rival for pole position looked set to be his teammate, Max Verstappen.

There had been a glimmer of hope for Verstappen as his Red Bull was sacked up five minutes into Q1 but it was quickly shut off again when oil was spotted coming from the gearbox.

He will now start from the back of the field, on a track where overtaking is extremely hard.

But the problem was exacerbated this year because drivers were driving slowly to ensure the fragile "hyper-soft" and "ultra-soft" tyres, the two softest in Pirelli's range, made the required stint lengths. That led to stern words of warning from Red Bull boss Christian Horner, who said his recent string of mistakes has to end, and motorsport chief Helmut Marko, who said the Dutchman had to stop being so "impatient" when inside the cockpit. "He got bitten pretty hard today in a session that doesn't really count for anything except setting up the vehicle". You race other people but ultimately the track is the one you have got to beat. "He knows that more than anybody".

Ricciardo will have Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton in his mirrors though, poised to capitalise on any mis-steps on a street circuit where overtaking is always tricky.

"You have done an wonderful job today", team boss Christian Horner said after Ricciardo took the chequered flag 7.3 seconds clear of Vettel for his second win of the season and seventh of his career.

"We were the fourth fastest auto around here this weekend, and seventh in the race is what we would have deserved". "I've given it everything I could". We're going to make sure we're on our toes and able to react tomorrow. "There's a lot more work still to be done, but we head to Canada feeling confident that we're headed in the right direction".

Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen agreed that the race had not been exciting, having started and finished in the same position - fourth - after one pitstop.

In the battle to be "best of the rest" after the top three teams, veterans Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez were scrapping it out with the new kids on the block.

Force India's Esteban Ocon took a hard fought sixth, with the bottom five Q3 drivers covered by just 0.160s. Gasly had to hold off Nico Hulkenberg at the end of the race, who used an alternative strategy to go from 11th on the grid to eighth at the finish and attack at the end of the race on hyper-soft tyres.
