  • US officials travel to North Korea to prepare for summit despite uncertainty

May 25 (Korean time): Kim Kye Kwan's statement comes out in a calmer tone: "We would like to make known to the USA side once again that we have the intent to sit with the USA side to solve the problem regardless of ways at any time". "That hasn't changed. It's moving along pretty well, so we'll see what happens", Trump told reporters at the White House during a meeting with a United States prisoner freed by Venezuela.

"I conveyed President Trump's firm resolve to end hostile relations and provide economic cooperation if Chairman Kim brings about complete denuclearization", Moon said, adding that he briefed Kim Jong-un on his meeting with US President Donald Trump. The move ends months of diplomatic advances that had been heralded by Trump as the likely precursor to a historic peace deal and the denuclearization of North Korea.

Moon told reporters Sunday that Kim reaffirmed his denuclearization commitment and told Moon he's willing to cooperate to end confrontation for the sake of the successful North Korea-U.S. summit.

Kim "made clear once again his intentions to completely denuclearize the Korean Peninsula", Moon said.

"While Washington and Pyongyang have expressed their hopes for a summit through published statements, Moon has to step up as the mediator because the surest way to set the meeting in stone would be an official confirmation of intent between heads of states", Hong said. "North Korea summit happens, it will be in Singapore on June 12". "It's moving along very nicely", he said. "I think people want to see if we can get the meeting and get something done", he said.

At the press conference, Moon said that the success of the US-North Korea summit hinges on working-level talks between the two countries, and that he has high hopes that the meeting will go as planned on June 12.

The North originally requested the meeting, but cancelled with less than 10 hours until the rendezvous.

On Saturday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that the special United States "pre-advance" delegation from the USA administration would go to Singapore.

While Trump's summit cancellation caused anxiety for USA ally South Korea, Seoul is expected to keep enforcing existing sanctions. In his official signed letter he says, "Based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting".

Putin said that Russian Federation had "counted" on the summit to be "the beginning to the whole process of denuclearization". Moon said Sunday that the North's disarmament could be still be a hard process even if Pyongyang, Washington and Seoul don't differ over what "complete denuclearization" of the peninsula means.

A summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump is anticipated on July 12. The Trump-Kim summit hit a snag after North Korea lambasted Vice President Mike Pence and National Security Adviser John Bolton for suggesting it give up its nuclear weapons before receiving anything in return - the so-called Libya model.

"A meeting was held because officials of both countries thought that meeting face-to-face would be better than a phone call", Moon said, noting that the summit was in line with previous agreements for the two leaders to meet more often.
