Nearly 100 people have been quarantined inside their homes in the state, which is a popular tourist destination.

Nipah virus infection in humans has a range of clinical presentations, from asymptomatic infection to acute respiratory syndrome and fatal encephalitis.

Symptoms of Nipah virus are trouble in breathing, brain swelling, headache, fever, drowsiness, disorientation and delirium. There is no cure known yet, and patients are only given supportive care.

"All steps to prevent the spread of the virus have been taken", she added, urging people not to destroy colonies of fruit bats.

Eight of the dead are from Kerala's Kozhikode district, the hub of the outbreak, where multiple members of one family were the first to be infected.

Government has also announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakhs to the families of other victims of Nipah Virus. With this, the number of people infected with Nipha virus has risen to 13 of which 10 have died.

Officers of the Health Department, Animal Husbandry Department and Forest Department arrived at the Burma Papadi School, following a directive from the Deputy Commissioner, and took samples from the dead bats for further investigation.

It is noted that Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare J.P Nadda taking cognizance of the issue, and also directed to constitute a team of six doctors to investigate the outbreak of the rare and deadly virus.




So far, the department has sent 160 samples to Manipal. The report is expected on Friday. In Karnataka, health officials have been put on alert. The Kerala Health Ministry on Tuesday said the outbreak of Nipah virus is contained now and there was no need for the residents to worry. In the hour of crisis, a group is spreading misinformation against the Nipah virus in a few cities.

A state government statement said "travelling to any part of Kerala is safe". "However, if travellers wish to be extra cautious, the may avoid the four districts".

A travel advisory was also issued by Bahrain.

The outbreak of the disease was first reported in Kampung Sungai Nipah, Malaysia in 1998. Human-to-human transmission has also been documented, including in a hospital setting in India, the World Health Organization says.
