Apple blocks Steam Link on iOS for 'business conflicts'

  • Apple Blocks Valve's New Steam Link App From iOS Release

Apps often land first on iOS, and maybe later on Android, but that's not the case with the latest app from gaming service Steam.

Apple has rejected a Steam Link app for iOS. Following its recent announcement and subsequent beta release on Android, Valve has revealed that Apple has reversed its decision and will not allow the app to be released on the iOS App Store.

What business conflict could possibly block an app that streams PC games? The firm appealed, but Apple did not relent.

They continued: "Valve appealed, explaining the Steam Link app simply functions as a LAN-based remote desktop similar to numerous remote desktop applications already available on the App Store". It's plausible this functionality ran afoul of Apple's guidelines, which require a 30-percent revenue share for any "in-app purchases".

Valve is understandably hacked off having spent many hours on this project and the approval process.

I've reached out to Valve and Apple to ask for more details about those "business conflicts", and I'll update this post with any new information. The company doesn't take a cut out of these sales and you could be doing such things on any other remote desktop client as well. It subjects apps and developers to what may at times seem like whimsical standards.

In light of Facebook's most recent and biggest scandal, Apple has often touted its more direct and human-curated system of screening apps that go into its app stores.

Essentially meaning that there is no chance of seeing Steam Link on an Apple device. But it's not just Valve that's missing out; iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV owners have also lost what might have been one of this year's best iOS apps.
