Trump to demand DOJ review claims of FBI spy on campaign

  • US to examine Trump's allegation his campaign was under surveillance

"If anyone did infiltrate or surveil participants in a presidential campaign for inappropriate purposes, we need to know about it and take appropriate action", Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said in a statement late on Sunday.

"He'll wrap it up when he thinks he's turned over every rock, and when that is will depend on how cooperative witnesses, persons of interest and maybe even some targets are, if any of those emerge, and on what new evidence he finds, not on some arbitrary, first-of-the-month deadline one of the president's attorneys cooks up", said the source, a US official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

In the wake of Trump's demands, the Justice Department asked its inspector general to see if there was any impropriety or political motivation in how the FBI conducted its counterintelligence investigation of persons suspected of involvement with Russian agents who interfered in the presidential election.

Trump's pressure on Justice Department - its watchdog later Sunday agreed to expand its existing probe of FBI actions - reached a new intensity with the demand, which is part of the White House's aggressive new strategy to combat the threat posed by special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation into the Russian Federation probe.

The president's tweets were in response to articles appearing in The Washington Post and The New York Times reporting that the Federal Bureau of Investigation used an informant-a retired American professor living in the United Kingdom-to pass on information he learned while advising the campaign.

"It would be at best irresponsible, and at worst potentially illegal, for members of Congress to use their positions to learn the identity of an FBI source for the goal of undermining the ongoing investigation into Russian interference in our election", said Senator Mark Warner, the Senate Intelligence Committee's top Democrat.

"It bothers me that they may be an informant in one of the campaigns unless there is a damn good reason", Graham said.

The Department of Justice has asked its inspector general to investigate possible infiltration into Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. Negotiations between the House Republicans and the Justice department appeared to stall last week ahead of Trump's tweet - an apparent reversal of the White House's initial policy.

The New York Times said on Saturday the meetings were an indication that other countries besides Russian Federation may have offered help to Trump's presidential campaign.

Senator Mark Warner, who is the ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said: "Publicly outing a source risks not only their life, but the lives of every American, because when sources are burned it makes it that much harder for every part of the intelligence community to gather intelligence on those who wish to do us harm".

Then-FBI Director James Comey dispelled the notion, later testifying to Congress that internal reviews found no information to support the president's allegation.

What is the informant's connection to Mueller?

So far, the Mueller team has indicted a total of 22 people and companies.

"At what point does this soon to be $20,000,000 Witch Hunt, composed of 13 Angry and Heavily Conflicted Democrats and two people who have worked for Obama for 8 years, STOP!" Mr Mueller is a Republican.
