  • 'Things could have gone much worse': Former student is shot by officer during gunfire exchange at Dixon High School

A police officer from IL, has prevented what could be a bloody attack on the high school Dixon, when faced with a former student who opened fire in the hallway, when high school students rehearsed for the upcoming prom nearby.

The former student came to Dixon High School Wednesday and opened fire at the school resource officer, Sauk Valley Media reports.

The suspect is now receiving medical treatment after being taken into custody.

Dixon City Manager Danny Langloss said students were gathered in the school gymnasium for graduation practice when the gunfire exchange occurred.

The suspected shooter was a student at Dixon High School. According to tweet from CBS Evening News, city officials have confirmed that the suspect was male. The officer returned fire, striking the gunman, according to authorities. "I thought it was going to be another mass shooting" Howell said Dallas ran toward the shots, coming face-to-face with 19-year-old Matt Milby, a former student, holding a gun.

Howell praised the school resource officer, saying he "could not be more proud" of him. That resource officer, who is not named at this time, confronted the suspect. There were no injuries to staff, students or members of the community. Per USA Today, agents from the ATF's Chicago and Rockford, Ill., offices have been sent to Dixon to assist with the investigation. Amboy School District is not on any lock down.

Dixon High School was evacuated and parents are now being allowed to pick-up their children.

The School unification point will be at the baseball fields in Page Park.

The suspect was arrested and being treated for his injuries. No one else was injured.
