Tiger gets the loud roars, but Webb has the bite

  • Players Championship: Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth prove unable to stop Webb Simpson

"I played so well this weekend; unfortunately, I just didn't cash in", said Woods, who finished tied for 11th, seven shots behind eventual victor Simpson.

Simpson, who shot 73 Sunday and won the Players by four - even with his 72nd-hole double bogey - ranked dead last in driving distance for the week (280.5 yards) and was almost 13 yards behind the field average.

It's that randomness - Simpson hadn't won in five years, and at one point had it to 20 under par - that will make Woods' next victory, if it comes, so satisfying.

When you pick up more than nine strokes on the field for the week in strokes gained/putting, it's easy to key in on your putter as the club that helped you win the tournament.

"I feel like it's my first win", he admitted of a success that threw up an interesting fact in that Simpson ranked first in driving accuracy and last in driving distance in the event. There is a feel-good factor around him at the moment and he claims it is only a matter of time before he wins a tournament. Many in Scotland, of course, will still remember his less than convincing opening tee shot in the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, but there was nothing meek about this display. Webb Simpson, who had not won in five years, romped home by four strokes having done the damage over the first two days, including a course record 63 on Friday that gave him a seven-stroke lead at halfway on 15 under par.

For the second day running, the former world No. 1 plundered the first 12 holes at TPC Sawgrass, this time picking up six birdies.

From making the cut on the mark Woods proceeded to light up Ponte Vedra. His charge was halted after a double bogey at the island-green 17th.

His three-under 69 left him with a share of 11th place on 11-under par.

Tiger Woods turned in his best round of the season and his lowest score ever at The Players Championship. "I hit it good all day long, and it's just the way it goes". Woods is now No. 80 in the world.

Justin Thomas also has cause for celebration going into Memorial after becoming the 21st different golfer to become world No. 1 following his joint-11th finish at the Players.

South African Charl Schwartzel (67) and Americans Xander Schauffele (67) and Jimmy Walker (67) tied for second on 14 under.

He pointed to his tee shot at the 242-yard, par-3 eighth, which landed a little more than 30 feet from the hole; his second shot at the par-5 ninth, which stopped on the fringe from almost 270 yards out; and his approach shot at the par-5 11th, before landing on the putting surface and leaving him a lengthy eagle putt.

"There's so much noise in front of us with Tiger", said Simpson.

Only those with heads buried in sand, though, could deny that what we have seen from the 14-time major victor over the past few months has made that a distinct possibility, which is absolutely brilliant for the game. I didn't start putting better immediately, but it's what led to using the Kuch-style putter.
