  • Multiple blasts have rocked the Afghanistan capital Kabul today

The NDS, which is the intelligence wing of Afghanistan, said three separate attacks were carried out in Kabul.

Within the japanese Nangarhar province, a rocket fired by insurgents struck a market, killing two folks and wounding 19, based on Attahullah Khogyani, spokesman for the provincial governor.

"Two attackers who tried to enter the police compound were shot dead", the spokesman added.

More than a dozen people died and 33 were injured in that attack.

However, Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security said that the coordinated assaults were organized by the Haqqani network, a militant group affiliated with the Taliban that has a long record of urban attacks.

Apart from the bomber, no casualties were reported and there was no claim of responsibility.

The Islamic State outfit claimed responsibility for the attack in Police District 13 while the Taliban reportedly claimed responsibility for the other attack, Xinhua said.

The spokesperson said that security forces were battling gunmen who have occupied the nearby building in both areas. He says there was sporadic gunfire after the blast, as a "cleanup operation" is underway.

In the first incident in western Kabul, assailants hurled hand grenades and blew themselves up, setting part of the police station on fire.

The militant group specified that its "primary target" are the USA forces in war-torn Afghanistan.

He also added that explosion happened close to different police station.

It comes just a week after twin blasts in Kabul killed 25 people, including AFP chief photographer Shah Marai and eight other journalists.

Elsewhere in Afghanistan, the Taliban superior on a district compound, officers mentioned Wednesday, with one reporting the seize of the northern district by the insurgents and one other saying heavy preventing was nonetheless underway.

Although the government forces have recaptured Bilchiragh district in the northern Faryab province and have been fighting back to evict militants from the remaining Kohistan and Tala-o-Barfak districts, Afghans have doubted government's ability to root out militants and bring about lasting peace in the country.
