Will Trump's Withdrawal from Iran Deal Make the USA a 'Pariah State'?

  • Trump's big gift to the oil price rally and the ensuing chaos

"We want to keep in place the controls and transparency rules", Maas said Wednesday during a news conference, adding that "it is totally unclear what the USA envisages as an alternative to the deal that prevents Iran from developing nuclear weapons while being able to verify compliance".

USA officials estimate there are about six Americans being held in Iran, though experts on the country say the number is probably higher, as some families choose not to publicize their loved ones' situation in the hope that a quiet approach will make for a quicker release. Therefore, withdrawing from the Iran deal is only step one of what needs to happen to roll back the Iranian regime's unchecked expansionism and worldwide terrorist campaigns.

The comments came a day after Trump announced he was withdrawing the US from the accord with Iran, abruptly restoring harsh sanctions in the most consequential foreign policy action of his presidency.

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, called Trump's decision to withdraw from the nuclear agreement "silly and superficial".

"The fact is, this was a disgusting, one-sided deal that should have never, ever been made", Trump said. "It didn't bring calm, it didn't bring peace, and it never will".

Israel and Saudi Arabia welcomed the American move.

In particular, Germany, the United Kingdom and France urged the U.S.to stay in the deal.

The Monroe Doctrine, which asserts the right of the United States to prevent adversarial meddling in the Western Hemisphere, is essential to US safety and security.

Analysts' estimates of the possible reduction in Iranian crude supplies as a result of any new USA sanctions range from 200,000 bpd to 1 million bpd.

In the run-up to the announcement, European leaders had lobbied for continuing the accord.

UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson told parliament on Wednesday that, given Trump's hasty and unilateral decision to renege on the nuclear deal, the onus was on the United States to provide and describe, in detail, a suitable alternative solution to manage the countries' "shared concerns".

On Tuesday, President Trump announced his administration would be reimposing sanctions lifted under the deal, a move that the White House described as "terminating the United States' participation in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)", the pact's official name.

John Bolton is US national security adviser.

Sens. Johnny Isakson and David Perdue, both R-Ga., expressed opposition to the deal when it was announced in 2015, and they reiterated that opposition this week.

President Trump long cautioned that absent a fix to the agreement's flaws, his administration would not continue to implement it.

A number of countries have already cut reliance on Iranian oil, as well as other "traditional" sources of supply, due to a surge in cheaper US crude exports. Should the mullahs perceive that America or its allies would never take kinetic action to remove their nuclear facilities, they would likely expedite a further military buildup coupled with the rapid development of nuclear weapons. French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted that "the nuclear non-proliferation regime is at stake".
