Pakistan on Sunday strongly condemned a terrorist attack at a voter registration center in a mosque in the eastern Afghan city of Khost which killed and injured scores of innocent people. But the Taliban, and the local cell of the Islamic state oppose democratic elections in the country.

The explosion was at least the sixth attack on voter-registration activities in Afghanistan since authorities last month began requiring citizens to register to vote in person at centers across the country. He said 10 Afghan soldiers and three Taliban fighters were wounded in the battle to control Andar district. However, Afghan Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid was quoted in Times of India saying that, "So far, we don't have any update about the abduction issue". "Ambulances are still bringing more people", he added.

According to the top USA watchdog on Afghanistan, the number of Afghan security forces fell by almost 11 percent in the past year, and the vast majority of Afghan forces are incapable of preventing the Taliban from capturing territory.

In another incident on Sunday, a vehicle carrying shopkeepers on their way to a market struck a roadside bomb in Afghanistan's northern Faryab province, killing seven of them.

But provincial deputy director of public health Gul Mohammad Mangal said at least 12 people had been killed and 33 wounded in the explosion. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the abduction, but Baghlan Governor Abdul Hai Niamati blamed "groups opposed to the Afghan government" and said efforts are on trace the engineers and negotiate their release.
