  • Chris Froome will target a third straight Grand Tour success but his salbutamol case looms large over his participation

Chris Froome recovered from a pre-race crash with a muted performance in the Giro d'Italia's opening stage, a 9.7-kilometre individual time-trial, in which he lost 37 seconds to defending champion and stage victor, Tom Dumoulin.

Froome was pictured with a ripped jersey and shorts and cuts around his hip and right knee as his bike was repaired.

Team Sky said Froome was slightly injured but would compete in the opening time trial.

Froome's sample showed elevated levels of asthma drug salbutamol, but the 32-year-old has insisted he is not guilty of any wrongdoing.

Chris Froome (Team Sky) could only finish 21, 37s adrift, having crashed heavily earlier in the day during a recon ride. "It's going to be a painful TT for him but he is fine".

And the fact that a trio of climbers - New Zealand's George Bennett, Italian Fabio Aru and Colombian Miguel Angel Lopez - who also crashed whilst checking the course, are only just behind would not have been part of the plan. He was knocked out of the race after a nasty spill.

Today in Jerusalem held a race with separate start.

The 167-kilometre second stage on Saturday (Sunday NZT) will whizz down the Mediterranean coast from Haifa to Tel Aviv.

The last of the 101st Giro's three stages in Israel will take the riders Sunday from Beersheba through the Negev Desert to the Red Sea resort of Eilat, a ride of 229km. The Giro ends in Rome on May 27.
