And many observers have been left flummoxed by a debate widely seen as premature - to put it mildly.

Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter and most recently Barack Obama are all Nobel winners.

President Donald Trump departs the White House in Washington, en route to a rally in Michigan, April 28, 2018. "And even President Moon says that and he's been great", Trump said to supporters at a rally in MI last weekend.

There had been whispers that the president would be nominated after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un crossed the bridge into the demilitarized zone with South Korea in a historic meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in last week. Trump on May 1 said it was "disgraceful" that questions the special counsel would like to ask him were publicly disclosed, and he incorrectly noted that there were no questions about collusion. "I want to get it done".

Two days later he returned to the topic, saying it was "very generous" for the South Korean leader to suggest he receive the prestigious award.

Jimmy Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, after he left office, for his "decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to worldwide conflicts" as well as his work to promote democracy, human rights and economic and social development.

But "if in fact the diplomacy goes the right way", the scenario is "conceivable", he told AFP. They also agreed to achieve a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula, but failed to produce specific time frames and disarmament steps.

More than a dozen House Republicans, led by Rep. Luke Messer, formally nominated the president in a letter sent to the Nobel Committee on Wednesday. The Nobel nomination committee has been known to give prizes for ongoing developments, so the outcome from the upcoming meeting (s) with the Koreas may not matter, and Trump may in fact rightfully qualify for a Nobel Prize. Once again Obama apologizing to the world for us.

Messer first pushed for Trump to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in March, but following recent developments on the Korean Peninsula, Messer and House lawmakers made a decision to formally nominate Trump.

Anticipating the Trump-Kim summit, and the protracted diplomatic negotiations that lie ahead, some have opted for a humorous approach. Trump seems to gravitate toward leaders that prefer bullying over true leadership.

"The haters and the liars say I don't deserve this award".
