Mr Macron's office said that Mr Trump insisted on holding the symbolic planting ceremony despite the quarantine requirement and the roots were enclosed in plastic.

Photos taken on Saturday by Reuters photographer Yuri Gripas showed the tree was no longer on the South Lawn. The AP reports that the French president's office says the tree has been placed in quarantine, as is required of all plants and animals that enter the country from overseas.

US President Donald Trump had decertified the Iran nuclear deal in October past year, however, he has set a deadline of May 12th for a final decision in this regard.

However, by April 27, the tree had disappeared and been replaced by a discolored patch of grass.

Macron also tweeted a video of himself along with Trump and the respective first ladies planting the tree on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington.

It was put in quarantine, according to USA and French officials.

Late Sunday, the French ambassador to the US, Gerard Araud, said the tree's "disappearance" was only temporary.

"European leaders should encourage President Trump not just to stay in the nuclear deal, but more importantly to begin implementing his part of the bargain in good faith", he said on his official Twitter account.

The BBC cited a French gardening website that hypothesized the tree may have been moved somewhere else to better survive "the drought" of summer, and that it "may be back in October".

A White Home official mentioned the transfer was vital "to make sure the tree's long-term survival" and mentioned it will likely be shall be replanted "as quickly as doable". The problem: Parasites on the tree could spread to others on the White House property.

"Over 9,000 American marines died in the Belleau Wood battle in June 1918 and the forest is a memorial site and important symbol of the sacrifice the United States made to ensure peace and stability in Europe", the White House said.
