Washington Capitals vs. Pittsburgh Penguins: 3 Takeaways From Game 2

01 May, 2018, 04:49 | Author: Carla Brady

The Washington Capitals are averaging 3.1 goals per game and are scoring on 22.5 percent of their power play opportunities. A power-play goal by Jakub Vrana gave Washington a 2-0 lead in the first period.

The Penguins dropped game two to the Capitals 4-1 and now the series is all tied up at 1 with the series shifting to Pittsburgh for games 3 and 4.

In Game 1, the Capitals got an early 1-0 lead under 20 seconds into the game.

With all of that important details taken care of, it was a pretty chaotic path to get us to the end result.

Want more in-depth features and expert analysis on the game you love? . The Penguins seemed to score again midway through the third period, when Patric Hornqvist jammed in a wraparound attempt by Sidney Crosby.

But what's often overlooked when revisiting past meetings between the two teams and the constant reminder that Ovechkin and his Capitals have had a great difficulty in ousting Crosby and his Penguins from the post-season is that very little of the blame for that could or should fall on Ovechkin.

The Penguins were not happy with it, but that seems to be fairly consistent with how these reviews have been handled.

To make matters worse, a new name appears to have been added to the suddenly growing list of injury concerns for Pittsburgh. "We're going to let the league do their job, and we're going to do ours".

That would not be the only review in the game. If the call had changed, the Penguins would've climbed within one goal and deflated Capital One Arena. "I really haven't seen a replay of it or anything, so I'm not sure", said the Capitals goalie, who made 32 saves in the win. The Pens were trailing the caps 3-1 in the 3rd period when they were clearly robbed of a goal. Holtby had stopped the puck with his pad, but it was unclear whether it had managed to cross the goal line anyway.

This was the only angle that clearly showed the puck. "When you blow it up, you can see the white".

Then there was Tom Wilson!

Wilson said after the game he watched replays and didn't know what he could have done to avoid hitting Dumoulin's head. That is an average of 1.875 points per game.

Rowney saw limited actions for the Penguins in the loss as they were playing catch up for most of the game.

No real tangible update was given on Dumoulin's status after the game and Mike Sullivan brushed off questions from reporters wanting to get his opinion on the matter. Carl Hagelin also sat out (upper body injury) as both have missed the first two games of the series. That is a major dent in their forward depth.

In most ways, Winnipeg played a far better game than it did on Friday night, when it was outshot 48-19.

The only goal he allowed, a long distance shot from Penguins defenseman Kris Letang, was one that beat him through traffic that he probably did not get a clear view of.
