He is a president descended from immigrants but he won't put his hand on his heart and understand that we immigrants also have the right to be here. An organizer of the caravan vowed they would remain at the immigration processing center until "every last one" is admitted into the United States. "One of the most richest governments on the planet".

After the migrants arrived at the port, organizers huddled with American lawyers to discuss a plan, then sent a group of about 100 migrants through the entrance gates of the port.

"President Trump, who has often tweeted about the immigrants, said Monday night that the "'caravan' that is openly defying our border shows how weak & ineffective USA immigration laws are".

It is legal for migrants to arrive at an official USA port of entry and ask for asylum if they fear violence in their home countries.

As of midday Monday, the migrants are waiting for their opportunity to present their case.

On Sunday, between Tijuana, Mexico, and California, about 400 migrants claimed asylum along the USA border.

The monthlong journey of more than 1,000 migrants began in southern Mexico near the Guatemala border.

She said most were children.

"If members of the "caravan" enter the country illegally, they will be referred for prosecution for illegal entry in accordance with existing law", Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said in a statement. "Are you watching this?" he said.

Asylum seekers are usually held for up to three days at the border before they are turned over to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Let me tell you, we have gotten Mexico to work with us on stopping a lot of what is pouring in.

Why would a caravan of migrants spend a month trekking across several countries, battling hunger, filth and illness, when their chances of getting United States asylum are so slim?

"We have to have borders". We can build a base in Iraq in under a week, [yet] we can't process 200 refugees? Asylum seekers must have a well-founded fear of persecution due to their race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular "social group", a broad category that has included domestic violence victims and others.

The Trump administration has launched a full-court press in anticipation of the caravan's arrival.

He used the disappointing moment to make a political statement: "We hope that someday, the priorities of the United States government are such that we take care of people who are fleeing violence, before we try to round up people in our cities and deport them in ICE raids". Expressing solidarity with the asylum seekers, she told EFE it is hardly a choice "because they have to do it" owing to the violence at the hands of the gangs which plague their countries, and so they have surrendered "to do everything legally", and not in an illicit manner.
