  • Israel’s Mossad spy agency assassinated Palestinian lecturer

The IDF insists its sharpshooters "target only those who attack IDF soldiers with stones and Molotov cocktails, actively try to damage the security fence, or attempt to place improvised explosive devices along the security fence that could later be used in attacks against Israeli patrols".

The Israeli army says its troops only open fire in self-defence or to stop protesters attempting to breach the barrier separating the territory from Israel. One was killed, the other was injured and is being questioned by Israeli security forces. They all confessed to the crime and told about relations with the officers of the Palestinian security services.

The Israeli air force conducted airstrikes on six naval objects of Hamas in the Gaza strip.

Analysts said the three-day meeting of the Palestinian National Council in the West Bank city of Ramallah is unlikely to produce major policy shifts, but it will elect the 18 members of the Palestine Liberation Organisation's executive committee that effectively forms Mr Abbas's Cabinet.

Demonstrators are calling for a right of return for refugees and their descendants to what is now Israel.

An official in the Hamas-administered Gaza Strip accused a senior intelligence officer in the Palestinian Authority (PA) for the attempted assassination of the Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah, on March 13.

During the most recent protests the IDF said an unusually large number of people made a "highly organized" attempt to break through the border fence, which was thwarted.

Hamas deputy chief Khalil al-Hayya on Saturday said the PA had orchestrated the attack in order "to kill reconciliation".

Since 1948, the Israeli regime has denied Palestinian refugees the right to return, despite United Nations resolutions and global law that uphold people's right to return to their homelands.

It also released a photo appearing to show a group of youths tugging at barbed wire along the fence. Israel says it is aiming only at instigators, and accuses Hamas of using civilians for cover to carry out attacks. Though Hamas formally resubmitted to Abbas's authority a year ago, their reconciliation has been held up by disputes over power-sharing.
