  • CervicalCheck boss steps down amid smear test blunder

Ms Phelan revealed on the Ray D'Arcy Show on RTÉ 1 last night that Minster Harris rang her to personally apologise for what happened to her.

The Irish minister of health has said he "truthfully doesn't know" how many women have died from cervical cancer after incorrect smear test results.

Vicky Phelan was determined to have cancer three years after her spread test consequences of 2011 were mistakenly detailed as clear of variations from the norm.

At the beginning of today the court was told the case had now settled and the argument against the HSE could be hit out with no request.

By the time she had another smear test in 2014 she had cervical cancer.

After approving the settlement, Mr. J Cross turned to face Ms. Phelan and said: "if anyone can beat this, you can".

What is a smear test?

About 3,000 cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed each year in the United Kingdom, according to the NHS.

"CervicalCheck have identified and have contacted a number of individuals and have notified them that there was incorrect reporting of their original smears".

In September 2017, Ms Phelan was advised of the review and in November she was diagnosed with an incurable Stage 4 cancer and was given a life expectancy of between six and 12 months.

It was further claimed she was deprived of the opportunity of timely and effective investigation and management of her condition and deprived of the opportunity of treatment at a time when her disease was amenable to curative treatment.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is now reviewing cases from hundreds of women in Ireland who may have been wrongly given negative results by the national cervical cancer screening programme.

A smear test is undertaken to detect any abnormality which would be indicative that there is something untoward happening. "This will further reduce the risk of cervical cancer and improve identification of the risk of cervical cell abnormalities", the charity said.

The professor, who it was understood would remain in her position up until last night despite Minister for Health Simon Harris expressing he had no confidence in the CervicalCheck management, announced her decision in a statement from the HSE on Saturday night.

"A cancer diagnosis is one of the most, if not the most, hard experiences a person and their family can deal with".

"It has helped reduce the cervical cancer rate nationally at a rate of 7% per year".
