  • Patton Oswalt 'Freaks Out' After Late Wife's Book Helped Cops Find a Serial Killer

On Wednesday, April 25, authorities in Sacramento arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo in relation to four murders in 1978 and 1980, and cops believe the former police officer may have been involved in a string of other unsolved killings, rapes and burglaries across the state from 1976 to 1986. McNamara, who had worked on her book throughout their marriage, died on April 21, 2016, of what was determined to be a previously unknown condition and a combination of prescription drugs. "I mean, it's unbelievable", Oswalt told Meyers.

Comedian Patton Oswalt proudly and tenderly spoke those words to his late wife in an Instagram video on Wednesday. "The bracelets are on", said Oswalt, "and it feels like this thing that she wanted so badly is now done". "Not to discredit the work the police and the lab technicians did but it was her dream".

According to Yahoo Entertainment, Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones said Michelle McNamara's book had no bearing on the investigation that led to DeAngelo's arrest. Like they did for Kenneth Lee Hicks, thirty years after he killed Lori Billingsley, in Aloha, Oregon. "It kept interest in tips coming in".

Though he was too "neck deep in grief" and dealing with the realities of suddenly becoming a single father to be actively involved, Oswalt says he leaned on her publisher and other collaborators to get the book done. Mr. DeAngelo's name never appears in the book, and he wasn't on their radar as a suspect, Mr. Haynes said.

McNamara "didn't care about getting any shine on herself", Oswalt wrote on Twitter, comparing her to Frances McDormand's unassuming Detective Marge Gunderson in the 1996 film "Fargo".

Oswalt, Haynes, and another researcher called Billy Jenkins, published I'll Be Gone In The Dark posthumously in February this year, two months before DeAngelo's arrest.

It's been a unusual time for comedian Patton Oswalt, as his late wife Michelle McNamara's newly published true crime book I'll Be Gone in the Dark is very much in the spotlight after the arrest of a man suspected to be the Golden State Killer.

"Just the fact that they said the book didn't help but then said 'We've got the Golden State Killer, ' it's a bit contradictory", Jensen said. A documentary film crew was shooting footage for the HBO series as the speakers speculated on how long it would take for a suspect to be caught, not realizing it had already happened.

During a press conference about the case, police credited DNA evidence and the public's interest in the case for the arrest, but they stopped short of naming Michelle McNamara's book.

For Oswalt, the news of DeAngelo's arrest feels deeply personal. She also wrote about why and how the Golden State Killer case became her obsession later in life. Jones said it had not. It ends with a letter from Ms. McNamara to the killer, in which she predicts his eventual capture: "This is how it ends for you".

This is how it ends for you.

'You'll be silent forever, and I'll be gone in the dark, ' you threatened a victim once. "Open the door, show us your face, walk into the light".
