But authorities believe the same man continued terrorizing residents in the Bay Area before committing several murders in Southern California. In 1986, an 18-year-old woman was raped and murdered in Irvine.

"You did it, Michelle", Oswalt later told his 137,000 Instagram followers. "I am so happy that this case has finally come to an end and we have found the gentleman who is responsible for these murders and the rapes of all these women and has affected people throughout the state of California like no other person in the history of serial killers has".

"None of his actions in the workplace would have led us to suspect any connection to crimes being attributed to him".

Joseph James DeAngelo was the miserable old coot from central casting.

Kevin Tapia, now 36, said when he was a teenager, DeAngelo falsely accused him of throwing things over their shared fence, prompting a heated exchange between DeAngelo and Tapia's father. He was charged with eight counts of murder, but is expected to face dozens of more charges.

His late wife, Michelle McNamara, was a journalist who coined the name Golden State Killer and wrote a book on the 12 killings and 50 rapes.

On Tuesday afternoon, DeAngelo was confronted by officers and arrested in Citrus Heights in Sacramento County, said Jones. He was a former police officer in the city of Auburn.

"All of a sudden, in a six day period of time, we solved the case of the century", Sacramento District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert said.

Two years ago, nearly to the day, crime writer Michelle McNamara was found dead in her Los Angeles home.

DeAngelo's arrest brought a mix of emotions to survivors and the victims' families. "This was the last known incident related to the EAR/GSK in California".

Prosecutors say Harrington's brother, 24-year-old Keith Harrington and his wife, 27-year-old Patrice Harrington, were killed in 1980 in their home. After this crime, the EAR/GSK committed rapes in Stockton, Modesto, Davis, and the East Bay Area of California.

The killer, also known as the East Area Rapist, had stacked plates on top of Wardlow's mother's back so he would know if she moved, Wardlow said, recalling how he'd whispered, "Do you want to die?"

The Golden State Killer tormented his victims by placing creepy and threatening phone calls to their houses even after he had attacked them. Once saying he would "deliver a load of death" because a dog was barking.

He was taken into custody by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Division on homicide expenses for the 1978 deaths of Brian Maggiore and his spouse Katie, believed to be the Golden State Killer's first victims.

The terror started with burglaries and rapes in the eastern district of Sacramento County in Northern California the summer of 1976, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said. Police didn't realize it at the time, but the attacker's crimes fit the same pattern as Sacramento's East Area Rapist.

"The answer was always going to be in the DNA", she said.

DeAngelo is also suspected of being the Visalia Ransacker, who burglarized more than 100 homes and killed College of the Sequoia journalism professor Claude Snelling. She mentioned two detectives she has stored in contact with through the years emailed her with information of the arrest. The killer was linked to 12 murders, 45 sexual assaults and over 120 burglaries in the Sacramento area in the 1970s and '80s.

The official confirmed the identity on condition of anonymity before an official news conference yesterday.

Who is the Golden State killer?

"It took me a long time to be able to forgive him", she said.

"When you see the picture of someone you know so very close, there's that shock element and to look at Joe, I never suspected", Osborn said.

The Auburn Journal recorded DeAngelo's entry into the Navy in 1964 because his parents lived in Auburn at the time.

She was attacked in her home in Citrus Heights, where a property belonging to DeAngelo was being searched by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. She says she has a lot of questions for him. The police will tell the details of the case at a press conference to be held April 25. On Wednesday, she announced the arrest of DeAngelo.
