Brad Parscale, campaign manager for Trump's 2020 re-election bid, called the DNC allegations a "sham lawsuit about a bogus Russian collusion claim filed by a desperate, dysfunctional and almost insolvent Democratic Party".
The Democratic Party in the United States has filed a lawsuit alleging that top officials from Donald Trump's presidential campaign, Russian Federation and WikiLeaks conspired to influence the Republican's White House bid in his favour.
"This is a sham lawsuit about a bogus Russian collusion claim filed by a desperate, dysfunctional, and almost insolvent Democratic Party", the campaign's manager, Brad Parscale, said in a statement.
Trump himself is not named as a defendant. Certain claims in the lawsuit, he said, face statutory expiration dates. The complaint also sought damages for the hacking of DNC's servers.
The CFAA is the US' primary law against cybercrime and is often used to prosecute hackers for alleged "unauthorised access" of "protected computers".
The suit could face trouble in court because it failed to define hacked DNC computers as "computers" under CFAA guidelines, Jennings said.
The BBC's Nick Bryant in Washington says the lawsuit by the DNC is seen as a publicity stunt by many there, as it may not unveil anything that is not already being examined in other investigations - but could keep the matter in the public eye.
Jennings said the CFAA is a "core part" of his practice as a lawyer and this omission "jumped out" at him. Perez said the committee had alerted Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., the top Democrats in Congress, "when we were about to file".
The lawsuit offers a detailed narrative of the DNC hacks, along with episodes in which key Trump aides are alleged to have been told Russian Federation had damaging information about Clinton.
Vote in our informal and unscientific poll and tell us why in the comments.
Typically, foreign governments are immune from legal action in the U.S., but the DNC alleges the hacking was a trespass of their private property, which they contend removes Russia's immunity.
The Trump team's connections to foreign actors have been well documented in the press and through the special counsel investigation.
Still, it is possible the lawsuit might reveal new details. And we will know soon enough.
Trump tweeted that the DNC lawsuit could be "very good news", saying that his campaign "will now counter for the DNC Server that they refused to give to the Federal Bureau of Investigation", as well as Clinton's e-mails. To reach the discovery stage, lawsuits have to survive any motion to dismiss the litigation by the defendants.
But even if a judge did dismiss the claim, "it's nearly certain the DNC would be permitted to file an amended complaint to fix the error", the lawyer explained. We have to make sure that the elections coming up in November are fair.
DNC Chair Tom Perez appeared with MSNBC's Chris Hayes tonight to defend the lawsuit, saying "there is no accountability for what the Russians did".
So with that new found knowledge, we set forth to turn our lovely and expressive mugs into gifs for the Internet to use and enjoy. The new system takes some getting used to, and the quick 180 is a nice if imperfect addition, but quickly becomes second nature.
