Americans told to toss romaine lettuce as E. coli outbreak grows

Authorities pointed out, folks here at an Alaska reformatory fairly recently revealed feeling sick, soon after consuming romaine lettuce, which was traced back to lettuce heads acquired from Yuma, that is approximately 185 miles south west from Phoenix AZ. It is now advising people throw away whole heads of romaine in addition to chopped romaine.
Based on new information, CDC is expanding its warning to consumers to cover all types of romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region. No deaths have been reported.
"Unless the source of the product is known, consumers anywhere in the United States who have any store-bought romaine lettuce at home should not eat it and should throw it away, even if some of it was eaten and no one has gotten sick", the CDC said. "If you can not determine the source of your romaine lettuce, throw it away and don't eat it", the FDA warns.
No specific grower, supplier, distributor, or brand has been identified at this time.
Symptoms of E. coli infection include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting.
Those case numbers are not yet included in the outbreak totals. On Tuesday, a 66-year-old woman in New Jersey, Louise Fraser, filed a lawsuit in federal court against Panera Bread after claiming she ate contaminated romaine lettuce there and then had to be hospitalized for two weeks.
Other E. coli cases included in the outbreak have occurred in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, New York, Ohio, Virginia and Washington, according to the CDC.
The CDC reports that 53 people in 16 states have become ill.
Although only five to 10 percent of those with E.coli infections will develop hemolytic uremic syndrome, for those that do, the condition can be serious.
Eating food or drinking water that has been contaminated by E. coli bacteria may cause gastrointestinal distress.
