Sen. Menendez says will vote against Pompeo for U.S. secretary of state

  • White House presses Senate to confirm Pompeo as secretary of state

"The Secretary of State has a much broader policy portfolio than the CIA Director". It was recently revealed and confirmed by the President himself, that a secret meeting with the North Korean leader took place over Easter weekend.

He spoke with top White House advisor Kellyanne Conway on a call arranged with reporters Wednesday afternoon. "It's time to put partisan politics aside and confirm this nomination".

Democratic Sens. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire and Tim Kaine of Virginia announced their opposition to Pompeo this week.

"Shaheen says she is concerned about Pompeo's views on 'the LGBTQ community, American Muslims and women's reproductive rights, '" the editorial explained.

The committee is made up of 11 Republicans and 10 Democrats.

Meanwhile, the White House is working behind the scenes to break Democrat opposition to Pompeo, particularly in the Foreign Relations Committee. Rand Paul, his nomination is on track to be sent to the full Senate without the approval of the committee.

"IRS teams worked hard throughout the night", said Acting IRS Commissioner David Kautter.

In Florida, Trump told reporters before a lunch with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that he expected Paul would change his mind. The president recalled that Paul "voted for health care" when he was inclined to oppose it.

It would be unprecedented for a secretary of state nominee to lack enough support on the committee. Rand Paul of Kentucky, opposed — the committee may have few other options when it convenes as soon as next week. He says Pompeo has done a good job in his current role, but that it is not a policy job. John McCain, R, is back home in Arizona, receiving treatment for a rare and serious form of brain cancer.

Cotton singled out Sens.

President Donald Trump confirmed hours earlier that he dispatched Pompeo, who's now director of the Central Intelligence Agency, to Pyongyang to meet with Kim in advance of a summit expected for late May or early June where Trump will press the case for North Korea to give up its expanding nuclear arsenal.

'But again the first step is to get through the committee, and we'll see how that ends up'.

Pompeo is still expected to have enough votes in the full Senate to replace Rex Tillerson, who was sacked by Trump.

Heritage Foundation senior fellow James Carafano, who was on the Trump transition team, believes the Democratic leadership will make sure Pompeo wins, rather than appear overly obstructionist just as Trump is working to denuclearize North Korea and make America more secure.

Corker said it will be up to GOP leaders to decide what to do if Pompeo can't muster the votes at committee level. As an institutionalist, Schumer "thinks that unless a person is unqualified, the president has the right to pick" his top people. "In Congress, Pompeo voted as the conservative Republican he is".
