Syria said on Tuesday that a "false alarm" had activated its air defences, retracting earlier statements of an overnight missile attack on the central province of Homs.

An "electronic attack" was one of a handful of reasons given for why Syria's air defence system kicked into action last night, as the country's state media stepped back from initial reports that it had been hit by another round of missile strikes.

They also reported that three other missiles targeted the Dumair airbase in the north of Damascus, but were also intercepted before reaching the targets. "We do not have additional details to provide".

The United States has blamed Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad for the Syrian chemical attacks.

Neither the Pentagon, which led punitive strikes on Syrian regime targets at the weekend, nor Israel, which was blamed for an earlier strike on a Syrian air base earlier this month, claimed responsibility.

Opposition sources say Dumair airport is a major air base used in a large-scale military campaign waged by the Syrian army with Russian firepower that regained eastern Ghouta, a militant enclave on the outskirts of Damascus.

A local reporter for The Arab News said Israeli warplanes were spotted in Syrian airspace just before the missiles were reported. Shayrat airbase was targeted previous year in a United States cruise missile attack in response to a chemical attack that killed at least 70 people, including children on the rebel held town of Khan Sheikhoun.

The Pentagon denied any American military activity in the area on Tuesday.

Also friendly governments of this country, such as Russia, Iran, Venezuela, Bolivia, and Cuba, and social movements raised their voices of condemnation against Washington's unilateral military actions, which violate the principles of global law.
