Ronaldo: "I don't understand Juventus penalty protests"

  • Ronaldo:

Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale have been left out of the Real Madrid squad for Sunday's Liga clash with Malaga. "It shows that nothing is a given in football, you have to fight until the end".

Juventus goalkeeper and captain Gianluigi Buffon was given a straight red card for pushing English referee Michael Oliver as he vented his fury at the decision.

"And a dubious incident at the 93rd minute when we had a clear penalty denied in the first leg, you can not award that at this point", he said.

But Ronaldo, in his 150th Champions League appearance, then netted his 120th goal in the competition by converting the penalty with a firm shot into the top corner.

The Italian veteran, who is set to leave Juventus at the end of the season, was given a standing ovation from the home fans as he walked off the pitch in what is likely to be his last act in a long and eventful career in the Champions League.

Ronaldo leapt highest to head the ball down for Vazquez in the area, before the substitute was pushed in the back by Benatia.

But as it couldn't be written any differently, none other than Cristiano Ronaldo got in the thick of it, being awarded a controversial penalty with just seconds remaining.

The goal sent Real into the semi-finals for a record-extending eighth year in a row.

Spanish website Diario Gol reports that Barcelona players feel Oliver made the right decision, though sympathise with Juventus.

Real Madrid on course for another European crown: Los Blancos made history during the previous campaign as they became the first club to win consecutive Champions League titles in the modern era.

"I know people will look at it and say "well you should score penalties" but under that pressure, that is just mind-blowing".
