  • Anderson was best known for his role as Judge Harry Stone on “Night Court.”

"This morning at 6:41 a.m. the Asheville Police Department responded to the home of actor Harry Anderson where he was found deceased", Asheville PD's Public Affairs officer Christina Hallingse told THR. From there, he went on to star in Night Court for nine seasons, which ran from 1984 to 1992.

"Before his signature role on NBC's Night Court, Anderson played con man Harry "The Hat" Gittes on Cheers - constantly trying to scam money and drinks out of the show's star, bar owner Sam Malone played by Ted Danson". He also starred in the 1990s sitcom "Dave's World", based on the life of Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Dave Barry.

In 1990, the actor played the role of the adult Richie Tozier in the TV adaptation of Stephen King's It.

On "Night Court", Anderson played Judge Harry T. Stone, a young jurist who professed his love for singer Mel Torme, actress Jean Harlow, magic tricks and his collection of art-deco ties. Barry took to Twitter in the wake of Anderson's death to note that not only was Anderson extremely talented, but in essence, a "nice guy".

Anderson, who often said he was inspired to pursue magic by Harry Blackstone Sr., the famed stage magician of the last century, grew up in Southern California and began performing at clubs like Dante Magic Club and the Magic Castle while he was still in high school. He became a street performer and reportedly ran a lucrative shell game on the streets of San Francisco for a time. Night Court starred Anderson alongside John Larroquette as assistant district attorney Dan Fielding.

TV host and comic Chris Hardwick also mourned the loss, tweeting, " NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Anderson has said he never sought to be an actor.

Filmmaker Judd Apatow shared his memory of Anderson, writing, "I interviewed Harry Anderson when I was 15 years old and he was so kind, and frank and hilarious".

Anderson had two children from his first marriage to Leslie Pollack.
