A family spokesman says former first lady Barbara Bush is in "failing health" and won't seek additional medical treatment.

She has always been considered the rock at the center of one of America's most prominent political families, as the wife of a president, the mother of another, George W. Bush, and the mother also of a former Florida governor and onetime presidential aspirant, Jeb Bush.

"It will not surprise those who know her that Barbara Bush has been a rock in the face of her failing health, worrying not for herself-thanks to her abiding faith-but for others", said the one-paragraph statement released by the office of George H.W. Bush.

"I am sending all my love and prayers to the entire Bush family today", she wrote. She has been treated for decades for Graves' disease, which is a thyroid condition.

She has been married to former president George H.W. Bush for 73 years - since 1945 - and the couple has six children.

Bush is the mother of former President George W. Bush, 71, the 43rd U.S. president.

Throughout a long life in the public eye, Bush was a fierce advocate for her husband and sons, including former Florida governor and presidential candidate Jeb Bush.

She is also known for her sense of humor, once joking that her husband couldn't keep a job, but that, at least, he wasn't boring.

Bush was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital on March 30 when she was suffering from shortness of breath, the source told CNN, adding that she was released about a week ago.

She continued: "Also, George Bush has given me the world". Barbara Bush eschewed dying her hair, which ultimately turned white.

Smith College awarded Barbara Bush with an honorary degree in 1989.
