Bassist John Illsley acknowledged the awkwardness of Knopfler not being present and then took a subtle swipe at his bandmate and close friend by saying, "it's more than one person, a collective".

The Moody Blues started in R&B but shifted gears sharply with 1967's concept album "Days of Future Passed".

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducted its class of 2018 Saturday night in Cleveland, rolling out the red carpet for The Cars, The Moody Blues, Bon Jovi, Dire Straits, Nina Simone and Sister Rosetta Tharpe (though as usual, not for these three criminally neglected bands). "He referenced a new Rock Hall Induction category noting six influential songs, including Link Wray's Rumble", Chubby Checker's "The Twist" and Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild". After taped testimonials from the likes of Johnny Cash, Little Richard, Aretha Franklin and Jerry Lee Lewis, Alabama Shakes singer Brittany Howard inducted guitarist Sister Rosetta Tharpe, calling her "the godmother of rock "n" roll". Fans expecting something special were left disappointed. They performed together, singing crowd favorites like "Livin' on a Prayer", "You Give Love a Bad Name" and "It's My Life".

Both Sambora and Such rocked out with the current lineup of Bon Jovi for the group's full performance.

Bon Jovi's portion of the four-hour-plus event ran an hour-long Saturday night, with Jon Boni Jovi giving a lengthy 20-minute speech onstage. "You're at a Bon Jovi concert". The band then transitioned into a segment of "Free Fallin' as lead singer Brandon Flowers urged the crowd of 10,000 to "get on your feet for the eternal Tom Petty".

The Cars have pulled into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Below, catch some of these moments ahead of the Induction Ceremony's May 5 airing on HBO!

Simone received a passionate and show-stopping tribute from groundbreaking performers who she has deeply inspired, from Lauryn Hill to Mary J. Blige.

After being inducted by DJ Howard Stern, frontman Jon said: 'I've been writing a speech like this since I first strummed a broom and sang from the top of the stairs of my childhood home.

And Richie, who quit the group in 2013, was "very proud" to be back with his former bandmates. Without any sort of presenter, they humbly accepted their award and apologized for the absence of frontman Mark Knopfler, whom bassist John Illsley said couldn't attend because of "personal reasons".

According to USA Today, Howard Stern said of the group's rise to fame, "Aside from the incredible music accomplishments, they are some of the nicest men I ever met, humble and gracious".
