  • Hundreds of Palestinians Injured as Clashes With Israel's Military Resume

The Ministry said a total of 969 were injured on Friday.

His death brings to 34 the number of Palestinians martyred in two weeks of Return protests and clashes along Gaza's border with "Israel".

Since the start of the border unrest at the end of March, more than 30 Palestinian rioters have been killed.

On Friday, hundreds of Jordanians demonstrated in Amman in solidarity with Palestinians.

The protests, dubbed "The March of Return", have resulted in confrontations between Palestinians and Israeli troops.

Palestinian mobilizations in Gaza, which includes the construction of makeshift camps near the borderline, will continue until May 15, when Al-Nakba (catastrophe) is celebrated, the date of the foundation of the State of Israel in 1948 and the beginning of the forced exodus of 750,000 Palestinians from their homelands. It has said some of those at the border tried to damage the fence, planted explosives or hurled firebombs.

Health officials in Gaza said 363 people were injured by live ammunition and tear gas inhalation, although they did not provide a breakdown. Some 350 Gazans were treated for injuries, including 59 from live fire, Palestinian authorities said.

The Israeli army responded with gunfire and riot-dispersal means, it said. While Hamas in Gaza quickly voiced support for the protests, the relative tardiness with which its main rival Fatah expressed its encouragement from the West Bank highlighted the underlying Palestinian political divide. Demonstrators burned Israeli flags and raised Palestinians ones. Inigo Gilmore reports from the border. He said the Israeli military is "operating against it (Hamas) with determination and according to worldwide law".

"Some people believe we are idiots to think the Israelis will allow us in, they may not, but we will not stop trying to return", said a protester, 37-year-old civil servant Ahmed, as he stood on a hilltop overlooking the Israeli fence.

In all, 27 protesters were killed and hundreds wounded by army fire since late March. Hamas official Mohammed Thuraya said, "This is our duty to our people, to ease the suffering of our citizens".

OCHA said, "Gaza's health sector has struggled to cope with the mass influx of casualties, due to years of blockade, internal divide and a chronic energy crisis, which have left essential services in Gaza barely able to function".

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the European Union have called for an independent investigation into the violence.

The Stream will examine how the Great Return March fits into a lineage of Palestinian protest and what the prospects are for a broad-based, non-affiliated movement over the long term. Walter Miller, U.S. representative to the United Nations, said "bad actors" were using the "protests as a cover to incite violence". This statement was submitted to the Israeli Supreme Court, in response to a petition by two injured Palestinians, who were denied passage to a Ramallah hospital, reportedly leading to the amputation of limbs.
