However, Tolo News quoted sources as saying that the death toll was more than 10.

The Taliban carried out two attacks in Afghanistan overnight, killing at least ten people, officials said on Friday.

The center of Khwaja Omari district is 10kms far from Ghazni City and shares a border with Jaghato district of Wardak province.

Most of the civilians were killed by insurgents, and fewer people were killed by pro-government security forces than previously, said the United Nations quarterly report, noting that suicide bombings accounted for most of the fatalities as well as injuries, which numbered 1,495.

"All parties to the conflict in Afghanistan must do everything in their power to protect civilians from harm", said Ingrid Hayden, the secretary-general's deputy special representative for Afghanistan.

Rahmani said the Taliban planted mines to stop reinforcements from coming to help the government forces fend off the attack.

Afghan officials often give conflicting casualty figures immediately after an attack.

Officials say the Afghan Taliban fighters attacked security forces right after a roadside bomb attack in Herat's Shindand district, wounding many and escaping with their weapons.

.

The Khwaja Omari district's administrative head was killed in a predawn assault by the militants. It said three militants also died and four others were wounded.

Provincial council member said the district had fallen to Taliban, but police rejected the claim.

Fighting went on for about three hours until fresh troops were deployed to the district and the Taliban escaped from the area.

Around 45 insurgents were also killed and several others wounded, he said, adding: "Taliban have set alight the district office complex, but reinforcement arrived at the district and now the situation under control".
