The survey, conducted by Shoen Consulting on behalf of The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference) found that 11 percent of US adults and 22 percent of millennials "haven't heard" or "are not sure if they have heard of the Holocaust".

No one will or should ever forget the Holocaust.

Organizers say the lecture series was started more than 50 years ago by local Holocaust survivor, Helen Sperling. In many homes, businesses, and offices, people stopped their activity and stood still to remember the victims of the Nazi genocide.

As Israel is marking Yom Hashoah, the Remembrance Day commemorating the atrocities of the Holocaust, a study released on Thursday revealed the existence of critical gaps in knowledge on the subject among American adults.

Still, 58 percent of respondents believe that "something like the Holocaust could happen again".

Thirty-one percent of Americans, and 41 percent of millennials, believe that two million or fewer Jews were killed in the Holocaust; the actual number is around six million.

The survey also found that most believe there is still strong anti-semitic sentiment in the United States today, more than 70 years after the Holocaust. "There are places where you can learn about the Holocaust all over the country".

The notorious Auschwitz concentration camp was located in German-occupied Poland, but 41% of Americans and 66% of millennials, could not identify the camp.

While 41 percent of all USA adults were able to identify Auschwitz, two-thirds of millennials polled - 66 percent - could not identify the infamous death camp. Data was collected and analyzed by Schoen Consulting with a representative sample of 1350 American adults via landline, cell-phone, and online interviews.

"In a time of rising anti-Semitism and in the face of the dark regimes of our day, the worldwide community must act aggressively and with determination to ensure that such things never happen again", he said.

The Holocaust Knowledge and Awareness Study was commissioned by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany.

Greg Schneider, executive vice president of the Claims Conference, said, "There remain troubling gaps in Holocaust awareness while survivors are still with us; imagine when there are no longer survivors here to tell their stories".
