Staples, who powered the success of her family's Staples Singers gospel group, died at dwelling in Chicago. Yvonne sang on hits including "Respect Yourself", "I'll Take You There" and "Let's Do It Again", the latter two reaching the top of the USA charts.

Her father, Roebuck "Pops" Staples, formed the group with his children Pervis, Mavis, and Cleotha back in 1948.

They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999, and honored with a lifetime achievement award from the Grammys in 2005.

Roebuck "Pops" Staples brought his family from MS to Chicago so that he could work in the steel and meat industries.

When Pop's died in 2000, the group dissolved, but she continued to support her siblings.

Yvonne launched to fame as a member of the Staples Singers, a group that blends gospel music with soul and pop. She felt lost without her father's guidance and stopped performing.

She harmonized expertly with her sisters and they enjoyed a strong run of hits, usually in tandem with the Muscle Shoals rhythm section in Alabama. "It woke me up".

When her sister Mavis began a solo career in the 1980s, Yvonne performed the same double duty for her, singing background vocals and managing her tours until just a few years ago.

The group could have been Yvonne's runway to stardom, and it was one that Mavis used to become a national R&B treasure herself.
