India Bus Plunges Into Gorge, Kills 23 Students

People helping to rescue injured after a private school bus falls into a deep gorge in Nurpur, India, on April 9, 2018.

The bus had barely crossed 6 km when the bus plunged into a gorge on the side of the road with such a great impact that much of the vehicle was crushed.

The reasons behind the accident are not yet clear, according to an official statement.

Some of the seriously injured have been taken to hospital in Pathankot.

The bus was the only vehicle involved. Reckless driving, such as speeding, is blamed in many cases.




The deceased were identified as 26 school children, one driver and three teacher.While 13 died on the spot, the rest succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital.The impact of accident left many with severe injuries who died on the way to hospital.

Transport Minister Govind Thakur and all other members of the state Cabinet have also condoled the death of school children.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep anguish over the tragedy. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered. "My prayers and solidarity with those who lost their near and dear ones in the accident", tweeted PMO India. The boy also alerted a shopkeeper about 150 m away on the Malakwal-Symbly link leading to Chamba.

"I heard a loud bang and bus starting rolling down the hill", the boy said. Police said he was struck by the bus as soon as he stepped into the street. We have been able to account for 38 people in the bus.

Indian authorities have launched investigation into what caused the bus to lose control at the edge of a gorge, dropping some 200 feet to the ground in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.
