Flowers and balloons in memory of Henry Vincent were repeatedly attached and torn down on Tuesday opposite where the burglary took place in Hither Green.

Richard Osborn-Brooks, 78, was initially held on suspicion of murder, but released with no further action.

On Wednesday the Evening Standard said the man responsible for the latest shrine removal denied destroying the first set of flowers on Monday, but said he felt angry that the tribute had been erected near Osborn-Brooks' home.

But the whole memorial was down again within 20 minutes, removed by a man who called it an "insult" to Mr Osborn-Brooks.

Yesterday detectives released an image of the second suspect they want to trace in connection with the incident.

"These people won't put us down".

"We have used our roads policing unit to target hot spots of crime along with the drugs unit, the regional support unit and the regular units and they all work together and as a team and it has been a good success", said Supt Smart.

Elvina Lee, who said she was Vincent's first cousin, called whoever pulled the tributes down "scum".

"Strangers can say what they like about you, they don't know who you was so I don't care, I knew you and I loved you more than anything in the world".

"He wasn't a murderer, he wasn't a rapist, they're putting (sic) him as a monster", she added.

Ex-RAC manager and security guard Richard was woken up when Vincent and an accomplice broke in just after midnight at the beginning of the month.

A neighbour, Theresa Webb, described the tributes as "inappropriate" and of "poor taste".

He said: "These people are scumbags, scumbags, scumbags".

On Tuesday, the only tribute left on the fence was a teddy bear containing an emotional note from Mr Vincent's children.

He said this morning: "The police should come along every day with some street cleaner, a bulldozer, whatever and lift it up and dump all this stuff every single day".

A witness said an accomplice dragged Mr Vincent toward a van before leaving him for dead.

It comes after Scotland Yard issued an appeal for Billy Jeeves, who is wanted in connection with the burglary.

Police also want to hear from anyone who may have seen a vehicle used as a getaway from the scene, a white Vauxhall Astra van with registration GU52 AXT, in the days and hours before and after the burglary.
