Overseas, Focus will be available as a four-door sedan, five-door wagon and hatchback, Ford said.

Thanks to sleeker, lower profile body elements as well as an active grille shutter, air-curtain inlets, an optimised rear spoiler and underbody shielding, the Focus is more aerodynamic than before. Trim wise, the range starts with the Style and builds through Zetec, Titanium, sporty ST-Line, top-of-the-range luxury Vignale, and the small-SUV-style Active, which has higher suspension and more rugged styling. The new Focus stands on a new platform and gets updated variants of the 1.0 liter turbo and 1.5 turbo under the bonnet.

Overall dimensions are said to be unchanged, but the Focus' wheelbase will be stretched, and the automaker claims the new vehicle will boast "a more inviting and accommodating interior and more passenger space than ever". Because Ford ditched the out-going Focus's low-level trim levels to focus (sorry) on its best-selling trims, it actually means that the new model's range starts at over £2,000 less than the outgoing model.

The 1.5-litre diesel comes in 95PS and 120PS guise with emissions as low as 91g/km for the 5dr.

The result will be a significant drop in the number of orderable configurations Ford offers of the 2019 Focus. This includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop & Go, Lane Centering, Speed Sign Recognition, an adaptive front lighting system that avoids dazzling oncoming motorists when using full beam and, first for a European Ford, the option of a head-up display.

Ford has revealed the all-new Focus - and it will have some pretty cool technology when it arrives in Australia later this year.

Over the past decade, Ford has seen Focus sales fall by almost 45%, from 126,968 to 69,903 in 2017.

Not to be left out of the race to make cars smarter, the 2019 Ford Focus is said to feature more "advanced features" than any Ford before it.

The 2020 model will have an all-new suspension design and a stiffer chassis, along with a reworked steering system, in the interest of making the vehicle more fun to drive.

Deliveries of the new Focus in Europe should start later this year, while the US customers will have to wait about a year to get it.

The Active won't be available in the United Kingdom until the first quarter of 2019, so precise details about the car's pricing and specification aren't available, but expect the auto to be sold at a premium over the standard model. A new eight-speed automatic transmission also joins the lineup.

The next generation Focus has as few as 26 configurations, depending on the global market, versus 360 for the current generation.

As for engines there is a new 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol, not seen in any previous Ford and with a choice of either 150ps or 182ps while Ford's award winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost unit will also be available with outputs of 85ps, 100 or 125ps.

The Ford Focus sedan, for China.

The new Focus receives a chassis and suspension overhaul to increase torsional rigidity by 20 percent.
