  • Mobile And Sprint Reportedly Talking About A Merger Again

Citing people familiar with the matter, The Wall Street Journal reported today that T-Mobile and Sprint have restarted merger talks. The two companies are reportedly in merger talks.

According to The Wall Street Journal, T-Mobile and Sprint are now "at the preliminary stage" regarding the deal.

The latest breakdown in negotiations between Sprint and T-Mobile occurred late past year. Their last round fell through in November 2017 when both companies said that a deal could not be reached. T-Mobile has not yet responded to a similar request.

T-Mobile CEO John Legere. It is not known who was the initiating party this time around, but Sprint is seemingly in dire straight these days as its bleeds customers and attempts to raise capital to build out its nationwide wireless network. "This team was highly convicted that we had a unique opportunity for value creation with the Sprint deal", T-Mobile CFO Braxton Carter said early this year.

Of course, any T-Mobile merger with Sprint would be complicated by the two companies' parents: Sprint's SoftBank and T-Mobile's Deutsche Telekom.

T-Mobile and Sprint, the third- and fourth-largest wireless carriers in the U.S., are talking once again about a possible merger.

In the fall, Craig Moffett, partner and senior analyst at research firm MoffettNathanson wrote that the combined companies could save as much as $4 billion annually.

Over the last couple of years, mobile pricing wars were stoked in large measure by T-Mobile and Sprint, especially the spread of "unlimited" data plans, and other goodies that competition brought consumers.

Normally, such a mammoth merger would be subject to close scrutiny from the FCC, but the new-look FCC under Trump appointee (and former Verizon lawyer) Ajit Pai has shown no signs of wanting to be tough on big business.

Even if the renewed talks bear fruit, of course, USA regulators must bless the merger.
