The White House is gearing up for President Donald Trump to discuss denuclearization with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at their much anticipated summit next month.

USA and North Korean intelligence officials have spoken a few times and even met in a third country, CNN reported.

No other details about the Trump-Kim meeting, such as where it will take place, are yet clear, though a USA media report has said North Korea is hoping to hold it in Pyongyang.

He said he thinks the meeting will be a "very exciting thing for the world".

"We'll be meeting with them sometime in May or early June", Trump said.

"We've ever already been connected with North Korea", Mr. Trump said at the beginning of the cabinet meeting at the White House".

United States officials said Sunday that Kim was open to discussing denuclearization, clearing the way for a historic sit-down between the two leaders.

Trump agreed last month to a landmark summit with the nuclear-armed North but with no specific dates or venue set, there had been questions over Pyongyang's intention to participate.

The North had conveyed the invitation to a visiting delegation from South Korea, which in turn traveled to Washington and relayed the message to Trump. "Now there is a good chance that Kim Jong Un will do what is right for his people and for humanity", he wrote then. The envoys said Kim had expressed a commitment to denuclearization and promised to halt nuclear and ballistic missile tests.

Delury said that the USA should want Kim to feel confident going into these talks, rather than feeling cornered.

After yesterday's announcement the Asian country were willing to get rid of their nuclear weapons, Trump said on Twitter: "For years and through many administrations, everyone said that peace and the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula was not even a small possibility".

Indeed, North Korea laid this out very clearly in the middle of 2016, calling Washington's insistence that it dismantle its nuclear program first an "absurd precondition" for entering talks, and instead listed five conditions of its own.

"However, many important decisions, such as the appointment of Kim as Supreme Commander in late 2011, or purge of Jang Song Thaek in 2013, seem to pass through the Politburo meetings (with both full and alternate members being present)", said Fyodor Tertitskiy, an NK Pro analyst.

It has not been revealed what North Korea is hoping to achieve at the end of the bilateral talks.

Neither of the officials would say when or how the contact took place, nor in what location.
