In other quarter-final ties, Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff and Tim Puetz pulled off a shock 6-3 6-4 3-6 6-7 (4) 7-5 win over Spain's Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez to give Germany a 2-1 lead in Valencia.

Now world number one Nadal must beat world number four Alexander Zverev if Spain are to avoid defeat in the last eight.

Two breaks in each set were enough for Nadal to seal an impressively comfortable victory over Zverev in what was only the 31-year-old's second outing since returning from a hip injury.

Nadal said after the match he is still regaining sharpness. "I'm very happy with the match".

France has now won six consecutive Davis Cup ties, two shy of their all-time record win streak from 2000-2002. Zverev had given Germany a 1-0 lead by defeating Ferrer in three sets.

And he is hoping to take his second point for Spain this week as they battle back from 2-1 down against Germany.

The Davis Cup is usually shown on the BBC but with Great Britain not involved the option to broadcast the quarter-finals wasn't taken up.

Kohlschreiber twice fought back from a set down, but former French Open runner-up Ferrer broke in the 11th game of the decider and held his nerve on serve after nearly five hours on court.

Italy's Fabio Fognini leveled the tie for the hosts after a dramatic four set win over France's Jeremy Chardy.

"18 months ago, he was playing for the first time, and now he is our leader on and off the court", captain Noah said of Pouille. Germany also won the doubles match on Saturday.

Croatia will meet the United States in the semis in September.

Croatia, the 2005 champions, got off to a winning start against Kazakhstan in Varazdin when world No 3 Marin Cilic outclassed Dmitry Popko, the world No 258, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2.

"I played more aggressively as the match went on".

The USA were the first side to book their spot in the last-four of the competition as John Isner and Sam Querrey secured routine singles wins over Belgium's Joris De Loore and Ruben Bemelmans, before Ryan Harrison and Jack Sock completed the rout against last year's beaten finalists in the doubles.
